From Mind Map 89 to Action: How I’m Finding My Purpose and Direction in Life

Welcome to my first newsletter! I know the anticipation has been killing you, so here we go!

Of recent times I’ve been a little lost on thinking what my next steps are going to be in life and when I say ‘lost’ I really mean EMLC (early middle life crisis). I’m a big fan of personal development and have done a lot of work over the last year or so trying to understand who I am, what I want to do, my likes/dislikes, what excites/bores me, all in an attempt figure out who I am and the direction I’m going. I can now safely report after conducting multiple exercises, reading over 20 self help books and listening to 100’s of podcasts over countless hours that I’m no closer than where I was when I started. 😂 Well, that’s not quite true…

Although fundamentally I have no bloody clue, luckily through the exercises there was one unified solution to fall back on if this were the case, that is to focus on interests and areas of life that are exciting and give energy to see where they lead, So on my 89th mind map titled ‘what the hell I want’, I joined up the dots of my interests, improvements & wants in life and what fell out of that were 2 things.

  1. Writing and communication. As many know I was not blessed with literal skills, I struggle to read and can barely write, with most people noting my spelling and handwriting is that of a 5 year old of which I completely agree.
  2. To have and to make more meaningful connections with people I already know and to create future friends and a community (yes yes a bit wet I know).

One of my favorite quotes is “The thing we fear the most is the thing we most need to do” and for me, starting this newsletter is just that. As a fairly private person the format of an email newsletter suites me quite well and allows me not feel like I’m stood in the cold with no clothes on like it would if I were to post on social media for the world to see.

The concept is pretty simple, shoot the shit on what I’ve been up to, where I’m going and document as many ups and downs as possible and put myself out there. I’m going to commit to produce at least 1 newsletter every 2 weeks and stick with it for at least 6 months. It doesn’t mean to say it’s going to be forever or the format won’t change over time it’s simply about doing the doing, putting one foot in front of the other and following an interest to see where it goes while holding myself accountable. So please, if you haven’t heard from me in over 3 weeks reach out and give me some shit, I’ll honestly need it!

Cheers

Happy (not so new) year!

Happy (not so new) year! After a wild holiday season, it’s the perfect time to get back on track with all aspects of life. I know it’s been a lot longer than 2 weeks since the last email, but I had so many ideas for the first newsletter of 2023 that it led to procrastination. My plan moving forward is to create a framework, “The 1 thing newsletter,” where I share one thing from different areas of my life and save the longer form content for the blog. In the meantime, I’ve shared a few nuggets that helped me in the personal development field from 2022 that I’ll be continuing in 2023. Enjoy!
