AI Changed my world view

Hey friends,

Can you believe it’s been 2 weeks since my last email? The funny thing is, like homework in school, I’m writing this the day before it’s due to be sent. Man, I could write a whole book on procrastination but I’d never get it finished! 🙂

About a month ago, I was reviewing some notes I had made on the beliefs I held about the future when I came across this line: “AI will likely take over marketing, but content creation will live on because that part is truly human.”

In the last couple of weeks, I have gone down a rabbit hole and started playing with AI. I have tried everything from creating articles, blog post ideas, social media posts, business/product name ideas, adverts/sales copy, short stories, and even AI-generated images. Now, I’m not so sure about my original statement after all.

What is AI? Below are two explanations, one from me and one generated by AI.

  • The way I describe this type of AI is like Google, but instead of asking a question and receiving static answers found on the web, AI creates the response from scratch based on its learnings of the content from the web.
  • AI is like a computer that can think and do things on its own, like a person. It can learn new things and figure out how to do tasks without someone needing to tell it exactly what to do. This can help it do things faster and better than a person. (This sentence was generated by AI when I asked it to explain AI as if I were a five-year-old! Pretty cool).

How it works

I won’t dive into the intricacies of machine learning here, but I used an AI tool provided by OpenAI which offers a prebuilt user interface called a ‘playground’. Signing up is simple and anyone without knowledge of coding can get stuck in. All that’s required is to provide a prompt, such as a question or instruction, and tweak some settings to guide the tool in generating the desired output. Depending on the length of the output, it can take anywhere from 3+ seconds to respond. Here are a few examples of me playing around with it.

Text Examples:

I asked:

“Create a short funny Christmas story about childhood friends called George, Andy, John, Pete, James, Dom. The story line should include the nickname the group gave itself ‘Moorhead Massive’.”

The response:

Moorhead Massive was a group of childhood friends who loved nothing more than causing mischief. They were always up to something, whether it was toilet papering Old Mrs. Haggerty’s house or putting whoopee cushions on all the chairs in the school cafeteria. But their favorite prank of all was convincing George’s little sister that Santa Claus was coming to visit her on Christmas Eve. They would wait outside her window in the snow, dressed up in old Santa costumes, and when she came to the window they would wave and shout, “Merry Christmas, little girl!” She would be so excited and would run to tell her parents, who would then have to explain that Santa wasn’t really coming. But it was all worth it to see the look of pure joy on her face.

I asked:

“create email to my boss David asking for a pay rise after continuing to successfully hit my targets over the last 6 months.”

The response:

Dear David,

I hope this email finds you well. I wanted to reach out to discuss my performance over the last six months and ask for a pay rise.

As you know, I have consistently hit my targets over the last six months. I believe that my hard work and dedication to my job have contributed to the company’s success, and I would like to be fairly compensated for my efforts.

I understand that pay rises are not always possible, but I wanted to express my interest in receiving one. I am willing to discuss the specifics of a potential pay rise and come to an agreement that works for both of us.

Thank you for considering my request. I look forward to discussing this further with you.

Best regards,

Finishing up

After delving into the depths of Artificial Intelligence over the last couple of weeks, I am amazed by the potential of this technology and the impact it will have on our lives. The results I have seen are nothing short of impressive and can produce content that rivals, if not exceeds, what humans can produce even if only in a time saving capacity.

The AI industry is already a billion-dollar powerhouse, and is projected to triple in size in the next five years. As the technology continues to progress, the opportunities for growth will become even more expansive and exciting, with potential applications across a wider range of industries.

What’s your view on AI? Is it a force for good or evil?

Cheers

Happy (not so new) year!

Happy (not so new) year! After a wild holiday season, it’s the perfect time to get back on track with all aspects of life. I know it’s been a lot longer than 2 weeks since the last email, but I had so many ideas for the first newsletter of 2023 that it led to procrastination. My plan moving forward is to create a framework, “The 1 thing newsletter,” where I share one thing from different areas of my life and save the longer form content for the blog. In the meantime, I’ve shared a few nuggets that helped me in the personal development field from 2022 that I’ll be continuing in 2023. Enjoy!
